How to Declare
Step 1. Review the major requirements
Review the major requirements so you can plan to complete all the required courses for the major. Once you declare the major, your Stellic and SIS account will generate an Academic Requirements checklist to help you track your completed and remaining courses requirements.
How to use Stellic for Program/Course Planning
To add a program plan (such as a major, minor, or certificate) to your academic record in UVA's Stellic advising platform, follow these steps:
- Log in: Access Stellic using your NetBadge credentials.
- Navigate to Programs: Click on the Programs option in the main navigation menu.
- Search for your Program: Search for the specific major, minor, or certificate you want to add. Select it from the results to view a sample degree audit.
- Look for the Interdisciplinary - Neuroscience (BA) major.
- Add to Plan: Click the Add Program button (or "Add to Plan") to officially attach it to your academic planning profile.
- Use the Progress Tab: This shows your degree audit. You can view finished, in-progress, or remaining requirements, represented by drag-and-drop placeholders.
Step 2. Complete at least one Core Class
Complete one of the following core classes with a grade of C+ or better in order to qualify to declare the major. The college requires students to declare a major by the end of your second year. Plan to take one of the course below by the end of your second year. 3rd year transfers should plan to enroll in one of the following courses in their first semester at UVA.
- BIOL 3000 Cell Biology
- BIOL 3010 Genetics & Molecular Biology
- BIOL 3050 Introduction to Neurobiology or PSYC 3200 Fundamentals of Neuroscience
- PSYC 3160 Cognitive Neuroscience
Step 2. Sign up for major notifications
Join the Neuroscience Majors mailing list to receive notifications regarding the major. Prospective students are welcome to join the mailing list before they declare.
Step 3. Complete the Docusign Process
Students must submit a Major Declaration DocuSign form from the College of Arts and Sciences to declare officially.
- Read the Instructions: Carefully read the instructions in the link above, and then follow the first link to the PowerForm.
- Student: Enter your information under the Student section.
- DMC: Enter the Declaration of Major/Minor Contact (DMC) information:
- name: Lisa Ishler
- email: dli3a@virginia.edu
- Complete the required fields in DocuSign form.
- You do NOT need to meet with an advisor. So please move forward filling out the form.
- You do not need to enter all of your prospective coursework on the DocuSign form as you have already reviewed the requirements . Instead, please list out one qualifying core class (BIOL 3000, BIOL 3010, BIOL 3050, PSYC 3200, PSYC 3160) that you have completed with a grade. This will allow you to move forward to sign the form.
- Sign the form and submit it.
- The form will be routed to the Neuroscience Undergraduate Coordinator for review. You will be contacted by email if there are any issues. Once approved, you will be assigned an advisor from the Program in Fundamental Neuroscience and an approval email will be sent to your UVA email.
Step 4. Check SIS Academic Requirements
It may take up to 10 business days to process your request. During busy times of the year (beginning of year, enrollment periods, end of semester, graduation) this process may take longer. If you noticed your major has not been added after 10 business days, please reach out the Neuroscience Coordinator, Lisa Ishler, dli3a@virginia.edu to ensure we received your application.
