About the Graduate Track
The Program in Fundamental Neuroscience (PFN) at the University of Virginia is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of PhD neuroscience scholars. Our innovative graduate training experience builds upon UVA's long-standing tradition of excellence in neuroscience research and education, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to shape future innovators and leaders in the field.
At the core of our program is a commitment to providing students with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of neuroscience while fostering interdisciplinary research and cutting-edge approaches to understanding the nervous system. We recognize that tomorrow's breakthroughs will come from scholars who can seamlessly integrate knowledge across multiple levels of analysis, from molecules to behavior.
The PFN's training philosophy centers on the belief that to truly understand the complexities of the nervous system in health and disease, one must first master its fundamental principles. Our curriculum spans the entire spectrum of neuroscience, encompassing molecular and cellular neurobiology, systems neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, and computational approaches. This comprehensive training equips our students to tackle the most challenging questions in neuroscience, regardless of the specific subfield they ultimately pursue.
Our program leverages the exceptional talent, creativity, and passion of our faculty and students to create a preeminent training environment. We emphasize hands-on research experience from the outset, with flexible laboratory rotations that allow students to explore diverse areas of neuroscience before choosing their thesis lab. Throughout their training, students are encouraged to engage in collaborative projects that cross traditional boundaries, preparing them for the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of modern neuroscience research.
The PFN takes pride in its supportive and collegial atmosphere. Our weekly journal clubs, research-in-progress seminars, and annual retreats foster a vibrant intellectual community where ideas are freely exchanged and new collaborations are born. This environment not only enhances the quality of research but also helps students develop the communication and teamwork skills essential for success in their future careers.
We are committed to training and empowering scholars who will not only excel in research but also become effective communicators, educators, and leaders in their field. To this end, our program includes professional development opportunities that prepare students for diverse career paths in academia, industry, science policy, and beyond.
By joining the PFN, aspiring neuroscientists become part of a dynamic community dedicated to pushing the boundaries of our understanding of the brain and nervous system. Our graduates emerge well-rounded scholars, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to make significant contributions to neuroscience and related fields, ultimately advancing human health and our understanding of the human experience.
Through rigorous training, mentorship, and a supportive academic environment, the PFN aims to shape the neuroscience leaders of tomorrow – scholars who will drive innovation, make groundbreaking discoveries, and tackle the great challenges of this discipline.
