Admission & Requirements

Course of Study for the Neuroscience BA beginning Fall 2023

Beginning spring semester 2024, all students who meet the requirements below will be admitted to the BA in Neuroscience (NESC). Once admitted, students are required to take fifteen (15) credit hours of core courses, and twelve (12) credit hours of elective courses. Students must maintain at least a 2.500 GPA and a grade of C+ or better in all courses. Students will be dropped from the major if they fail to meet these requirements

Prerequisite Requirements for Admission

To apply for a major in Neuroscience, students are required to have completed at least one of the below 3000-level BIOL/PSYC courses and receive a C+ or above. All courses below are 3 credits:

  • BIOL 3000 - Cell Biology 
  • BIOL 3010 - Genetics and Molecular Biology
  • BIOL 3050 - Introduction to Neurobiology
  • PSYC 3160 - Cognitive Neuroscience
  • PSYC 3200 - Fundamentals of Neuroscience

Prospective majors must also have a 2.500 cumulative GPA at UVA and be in good academic standing.

Note: Most NESC students declare at the end of their second year. Because the major requires significant amounts of coursework, students declaring NESC in their third year or later must meet with the NESC coordinator or Director so that we can determine if it is feasible to complete the major in time to graduate.

Required Courses in Other Sciences

Students are recommended (but not required) to take these courses before applying for NESC major as many are prerequisites of Core courses and Electives.

Interested students are highly encouraged to take the chemistry and biology series as early as possible, preferably within their first year at UVA.

All courses in other sciences must be completed before degree completion.

  1. A series of Introductory of Chemistry and lab, CHEM 1410-1411-1420-1421 (Introductory College Chemistry and Laboratory), or CHEM 1610-1611-1620-1621 (Introductory Chemistry for Engineers and Laboratory), or CHEM 1810-1811-1820-1821 (Principles of Chemical Structure, Principles of Organic Chemistry, and Laboratory)
  2. MATH 1210 A Survey of Calculus I or MATH 1310 Calculus I (MATH 1310 is strongly recommended).
  3. STAT 1601 Intro to Data Science with R, or STAT 1602 Intro to Data Science with Python, or STAT 2020 Statistics for Biologists, or PSYC 2005 Research Methods and Data Analysis I. (STAT 1601 and 1602 are strongly recommended)
  4. Physics - two semesters of physics and lab. General physics I and II (PHYS 1420/1425&1429 and 2410/2415&2419), or pre-health (PHYS 2010, 2020, 2030, and 2040).
  5. BIOL 2100 - Introduction to Biology with Laboratory: Cell Biology & Genetics

Note:

  • None of the courses in this section count toward the 27 major credits.
  • Up to two CHEM requirement courses can be substituted with other 1000 or 2000 level courses offered in Engineering or Computer Science departments, demonstrating student’s strength in basic sciences that are relevant to neuroscience. However, substitute courses should be discussed with the director of Undergraduate Neuroscience Major for approval

*This course is often taught at a time that conflicts with a course required for the Distinguished Major Program (DMP). Students who are considered applying to the DMP are strongly encouraged to complete PSYC 3160 no later than the Fall semester of their third year to avoid potential conflicts with DMP courses.

Research

NESC offers two courses for research credit: NESC 3960 for majors, and NESC 3995 for non-majors. NESC majors can satisfy their lab requirement through two semesters of NESC 3960 taken with the same lab.

Non-majors intending on declaring NESC can enroll in lab research in the course NESC 3995 prior to acceptance in the NESC  major. Student must make arrangements with a research lab prior to enrolling in NESC 3995.

Neuroscience majors who are contemplating application to the DMP should initiate independent research in the course NESC 3960. All neuroscience majors are encouraged to apply for the Distinguished Major Program (DMP) during their sixth semester.  It is also possible and even preferable to initiate laboratory research during the summer. This need not be taken for course credit, and if the laboratory has sufficient funds, a stipend is possible to cover living expenses.

NESC Distinguished Majors (DMPs) are required to take the NESC 4970 and 4980 thesis courses their final year.

Complete a course planning form

Download and complete the Neuroscience Course Planning Form using the course lists on this page. Note the following:

  • You do not need to have completed all the Required Courses in Other Sciences before declaring, but many are prerequisites for core and elective courses so it is recommended that you complete as many as possible before declaring.
  • You only need to have either earned a C+ in a prerequisite course, or be currently enrolled in one in order to be eligible to declare. If you have not yet received a grade for your prerequisite course, your declaration will be accepted conditionally, pending a viable grade in your prerequisite.
  • Test and transfer credit can be used to satisfy the Required Courses in Other Sciences.
  • Required Courses in Other Sciences will not count towards the 27 required major credits.
  • Up to two CHEM requirement courses can be substituted with other 1000 or 2000 level courses offered in Engineering or Computer Science departments, demonstrating student’s strength in basic sciences that are relevant to neuroscience. Substitute courses should be discussed with the Director of Undergraduate Studies for approval.
  • Your course plan is not binding, and indicating that you intend to take a given course in a given semester does not guarantee enrollment.
  • When your course planning form is complete, please export the spreadsheet to PDF.

Officially Declare

Students must submit a Major Declaration DocuSign form from the College of Arts and Sciences to declare officially.

  1. Carefully read the instructions in the link above, and then follow the first link to the PowerForm.
  2. Enter your information under the heading Student.
  3. Under the heading Declaration of Major/Minor Contact (DMC) enter name: Lisa Ishler email: dli3a@virginia.edu
  4. Complete required fields in DocuSign form. You do not need to enter your prospective coursework on the DocuSign form itself.
  5. Attach the following:
    • exported PDF of your course planning form
    • unofficial transcript
  6. Sign the form and submit it.
  7. The form and attachments will be routed to the Neuroscience Undergraduate Coordinator for review. You will be contacted by email if there are any issues.

Check SIS Academic Requirements

After ten business days of submitting your declaration, your major and advisor should now appear in SIS. If it does not, and you have not been notified by DocuSign that your form has been processed, please contact nesccordinator@virginia.edu so that the Undergraduate Coordinator can check the status of your declaration. Please know that if you submit a declaration outside of the window within which declarations are accepted then it will take longer than ten business days to process.

Double Majoring

Each major within the College of Arts and Sciences determines if you can double major and if so, how many courses you will be able to double count (that is, share between your two majors). Neuroscience students who are considering adding a second major or students who are from other majors/undeclared but considering Neuroscience as a second major should be aware of the following conditions that the Program in Fundamental Neuroscience has for double majors:

  1. The Program will approve only one double counted course for Students who declare Neuroscience in Spring 2024 and later.
  2. Due to the significant overlaps in coursework, the Program in Fundamental Neuroscience does not allow students to double major in the following:
    • Neuroscience and Biology
    • Neuroscience and Psychology
  3. Students wishing to double major in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science may do so, but their Cognitive Science concentration must be in an area other than neuroscience (more information here)

Beyond these conditions, it is the responsibility of any student considering a second major to ensure that they are aware of and in compliance with each major's course sharing rules as well as College of Arts and Sciences-wide double major and course sharing rules.
